Bayern Munich's director of sport said Vincent Kompany had been diagnosed with meningeal irritation

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital following his collapse last week.

The Bundesliga champions' director of sport Max Eberl told German broadcaster ARD that Kompany, 40, had been diagnosed with meningeal irritation after being admitted to hospital on Friday.

Eberl was speaking before Bayern’s 6-1 thrashing of Magdeburg in the DFB Pokal at the Allianz Arena last night, five days after Kompany had collapsed while watching the club’s second team train.

"Given the circumstances, he’s doing well," Eberl said.

He added: "He ‌was discharged from the hospital (on Wednesday).

"That is the biggest and best news for all of ‌us.

"It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday.

"He will now rest and take medication and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100%."

Eberl had said on Friday that it would be "weeks, not days" before the Belgian, who had been ill with a virus, would be able to return to work.

Harry Kane revealed after his Ballon d’Or win in London on Monday night that Kompany had telephoned him to wish him luck earlier that morning.

Kompany missed Saturday’s 3-1 Bundesliga win at Freiburg, with Englishman Aaron Danks taking charge of the team for that match and the cup win over Magdeburg.

Bayern are top of the table on goal difference, level on points with Borussia Dortmund who they play at home on Saturday.
