Sir, – The true cost of recent electric unit-rate price increases is far from the headline rates we hear from the companies involved. I am a customer with a contract that runs from November to October. Last November, I was given a contract that included a 30 per cent discount on the “standard” unit rates. During the year, the company announced a rate increase of about 8 per cent, which is a lot in the current circumstances.
However, when my contract renewal came, the best discount I could get on this “standard” rate was 16 per cent (vs the 30 per cent offered in the previous year).
Where is the Commission for Regulation of Utilities or the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in all of this? Surely those bodies have a role in ensuring that unit rates are clear and comparable between companies and over time. – Yours, etc,
COLETTE McNAMEE,
