Sir, – Ella McSweeney clearly explains the damage done by dogs on Dublin Bay’s Bull Island (“Dogs not welcome if we want to to enjoy the spectacle of returning overwintering birds”, Life&Style, October 24th). As part of a Unesco biosphere, there are plenty of bylaws but they are not enforced. Dogs have destroyed the hares and ground-nesting birds.
Two days later, Caroline O’Doherty wrote about the need for intervention to protect Irish wildlife habitats (“Ireland urges greater efforts to save nature at global biodiversity summit”, Climate Crisis, October 26th).
Taoiseach Micheál Martin might now support Christopher O’Sullivan, Minister of State with special responsibility for nature, who is working to maintain wildlife diversity.
Bull Island is the jewel in the crown of Dublin and it should be dog-free. – Yours, etc,
DIARMUID Ó GRÁDA,
Clonskeagh,
Dublin 14.
