Sir, – Can someone explain why it is necessary to shut the city down for four days next week? (“‘Significant’ traffic disruption in Dublin next week for EU presidency meetings”, Dublin, November 4th).
If we are all being advised to avoid travel into the city between Tuesday and Friday, what are businesses in the city centre supposed to do during this period?
It is quite obvious that no one in the body politic is in there fighting for the interests of Irish business.
Our Minister for Finance and incoming taoiseach has not demonstrated any appreciation of the issues facing Irish businesses. – Yours, etc,
ANTAINE O’DUIBHIR,

Sir, – A Europe for everyone except those trying to get to work, school or hospital in Dublin next week. Do we not have fine facilities outside the M50? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I waited for an hour on the Knocklyon road yesterday for a bus. In that hour, several frustrated people eventually hailed taxis and three returned home, citing missed appointments. In that hour also, three buses did come along, all functioning mechanically, no wheels missing, but each with two signs. One read “Out of service”. The other read “We are hiring”. They all drove past, empty, heading somewhere safely, it seemed to me, perhaps to the dead buses graveyard.
This morning I heard a Transport for Ireland spokeswoman say that next week “services will run as normal, but there will be disruptions”. Sounds about right. – Yours, etc,
EUGENE TANNAM,
Firhouse,
Dublin 24.
