Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly and People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy claim only Government ministers can attend Cabinet meetings

The Supreme Court has begun hearing an appeal over super junior ministers attending Cabinet meetings.

Sinn Féin Kerry TD for Kerry, Pa Daly and People Before Profit Dublin South West TD, Paul Murphy claim only Government ministers can attend Cabinet meetings and the attendance of others breached Cabinet confidentiality.

In December, the High Court dismissed their challenges, ruling that there was no breach of the Constitution. They were then given leave to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Speaking ahead of the first day of the appeal, Mr Murphy said the current practice by the Government breaches the Constitution.

"If the Supreme Court rules in our favour that it is unconstitutional to have super juniors, well, then I think there's going to be a challenge to the Government, where the Government will have to stop the practice of bringing super juniors into the Government," Mr Murphy said.
