Connemara’s Killary Fjord named as top global travel destination by Lonely Planet

Killary Fjord, the 16km-long flooded valley on the Galway-Mayo border, has been named as one of the top global destinations by travel publication Lonely Planet.

Described as “a strong contender for the most breathtaking, achingly beautiful place” in Ireland, the Connemara waterway earned a place as one of 25 top destinations in the prestigious travel guide for next year.

One of three glacial inlets in Ireland, it is as deep as 45 metres in its centre, with dolphins and sharks spotted in its waters.

“It’s one of those rare places that genuinely takes your breath away,” said Daniel Bolger, a destination editor at Lonely Planet. “As Ireland’s only true fjord, it combines dramatic scenery with a sense of peace and stillness.

“Whether you’re walking the historic trails, cruising the waters, or simply pausing to soak in the views, there’s something so special about this place. Being there lets you slow down, reconnect with nature and appreciate the singular beauty of this island.”

Killary Fjord, sometimes referred to as Killary Harbour, sits at the foot of Connacht’s highest mountain, Mweelrea, and the Twelve Pins mountain range. Nearby villages include Leenaun in Co Galway and Delphi in Co Mayo.

Tourism Ireland said it “will take every opportunity to maximise this accolade” and announced a series of marketing measures such as promoting the destination to countries with direct flights to Shannon Airport and highlighting its place on the guide at major travel fairs.

“This accolade reflects its unique appeal as a special destination for overseas visitors,” said Aidan Power, Tourism Ireland’s marketing director, highlighting “the breathtaking scenery, rich history and the ability to slow down and spend time in nature”.

The small fjord is listed alongside much larger land masses including Alaska, the Antarctic Peninsula stretching toward Chile and the entire Indian state of Gujarat.
