Sir, – As I was nibbling on leftover Halloween treats I was jarred to see Merry Christmas written across the wrapper of one of the last chocolate gold coins that had been a favourite of the trick-or-treaters, bought hastily by one’s other half earlier that day in a German supermarket.
I used to believe it was an unspoken rule that retail stores held off on releasing their Christmas stock to their shop floors until at least November 1st. Alas, it appears that is not the case.
The insidious creep of Christmas in the country that is the “home of Halloween” is surely the most frightening thing about this time of year. – Yours, etc,
MEAGHAN CARMODY,
Donabate
Dublin.
