Sir, – I enjoyed Conor Murphy’s article on Soundings (“What an old Leaving Cert poetry book taught me about thinking,” Education, November 3rd).
I was at secondary school in the 1980s, so Soundings and Exploring English 3 (the Intermediate Certificate equivalent) were my introduction to a lifelong love of poetry. I have copies of both on my bookshelves still, and occasionally dip back into them.
Although you only had to study a selection of the poems for your English exam, I always looked on reading the poems and poets not selected for my year as a wonderful bonus. – Yours, etc
