We have two wines from Lidl this week.
The Awatere Valley is one of the cooler sub-zones of Marlborough in New Zealand. The wines tend to be lighter and fresher than standard Marlborough sauvignon.
Prices for Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) have shot up in recent years so I was pleased to come across one for less than €20. I won’t pretend that you will mistake it for a fine Gevrey-Chambertin, but I enjoyed my bottle with a mushroom risotto.
Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2025
12.5%, €9.99Light mango and passionfruit with plenty of zesty acidity. A good sipping wine, or serve it alongside mussels or creamy goat’s cheese salads.
Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune 2022 Celliers de Saint Jean
12.5%, €13.99Perfumed, with light red cherry fruits, an earthy touch and a soft rounded finish. Try this with autumnal dishes; creamy pork or mushroom dishes.
