Almost seven in ten households are near a high frequency bus service, new CSO figures reveal

New figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that eight in ten households are located within two kilometres of a bus stop while almost seven in ten are near a high-frequency bus service.

The CSO used Census 2022 data on the location of households and calculated the distance to essential transport services such as public transport and service stations.

The Census took place in 2022 and the CSO released the distance to services results from that today.

Today's CSO report shows that people generally live further from rail connections. Half of households are located within 5.5km of a rail stop but a quarter of homes were further than 15km from a station.

Unsurprisingly residents in the border counties are furthest from transport services and Dublin residents are closest.

Households in Dublin on average are a third of a kilometre from high frequency bus services. But in Roscommon it is just over 7km.

Dublin residents are just over 2.5km from high frequency rail whereas it is nearly 6km nationally.

For rail services, Co Donegal was the county with the greatest distances to a rail stop. Half of all households lived more than 111.1 km from their nearest rail stop, compared with 42.8 km in Co Monaghan, the county with the second highest distance.

The CSO said that one in four households were located more than 136.5 km away from their nearest rail stop in Co Donegal, reflecting the absence of rail infrastructure in the area.

The CSO also looked at distances to service stations and found one in two households were more than 1.4km from the pumps.

Households in Leitrim had furthest to travel to fill up.

But the introduction of home charging for electric cars will obviously change that in coming years.
