LOWVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A child in rural northern New York has died after contracting measles, marking the state's first death from the disease in 30 years, state officials announced Monday.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that the death in Lewis County reflected eroding vaccination levels. The state is experiencing a significant outbreak of the viral illness.

A child died in Lewis County associated with the ongoing measles outbreak, health officials said.

So far this year, the state has reported 178 measles cases.
