Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won election Tuesday as governor of Georgia, defeating Republican Rick Jackson.
With her win, Bottoms has become the first Black female governor in the U.S. and is Georgia’s first governor of color. All 83 of Georgia’s previous governors have been white men.
She is also the first former Atlanta mayor to be elected Georgia governor. She’s also the first Democrat to win the state’s highest office since 1998.
She previously worked in President Joe Biden’s administration. Jackson is a healthcare tycoon who tapped his personal fortune for his campaign.
