No shark net for Sorrento beach this summer, council says

By

The reinstallation of a shark net at Sorrento Beach is unlikely to happen this summer, after a council meeting last night determined more investigation into shark mitigation strategies was needed.

Perth father Greg O’Neill, 63, was killed by a great white shark while swimming off the popular beach last month. The attack was witnessed by horrified onlookers.

Since his death, the City of Joondalup has been under pressure to reinstall a shark net that was taken down in 2020 due to storm damage.

At a council meeting last night, councillors backed an investigation into current shark mitigation measures to better understand what’s working at each individual beach.

The local government says it met with state government officials about its beach safety just yesterday, and said it will take all the relevant steps necessary to protect beach users, once they have a clearer picture of what is happening along the coastline.
