Stonefruit

Contemporary$$

This venue is included in Good Food’s 100 Essential Restaurants list.

There’s no Best Courtyard Award in the Good Food Guide, but if there was, it would probably go to Stonefruit. This smart, heritage-brick restaurant and wine bar sits on the main street of Tenterfield, and opens to a lovely suntrap out back, where picnic tables sit beneath a canopy of grapevines.

Owners Alistair Blackwell and Karlee McGee have created a lovely little spot for a quick focaccia sandwich (there’s a $30 sanger and spritz special) or you can go down the snacking path, with boquerones draped over sliced baguette, and blistered peppers, smoky against cooling curds. Larger plates might carry a generous portion of local lamb shoulder with skordalia, or Yamba-caught mulloway with vermouth veloute.

To drink, the wine list runs far and wide, with Egly-Ouriet champagne alongside the local “Granite Belters” – with plenty of options to fill a slow afternoon. Dessert leans on the region’s celebrated stonefruit, layered over a custard tart or baked into a free-form galette. Out of season, you might get lucky with the strawberry ice-cream made on Stanthorpe fruit – that one, you’ll want to eat in the sun.

Good to know: Since you’re in the area, Essen Restaurant is also a must, just over the border.
