Sean's Bondi

Contemporary$$

This venue is included in Good Food’s 100 Essential Restaurants list.

In a world that feels like it’s shifting fast, Sean’s remains a rock. Little has changed since it opened in 1993 – there’s always a focus on produce grown with care, and stepping into the charming, art-lined dining room feels like visiting an old family friend.

The menu, written on the blackboard, lists three entrees, mains and desserts – there’s always roast chicken and a pasta, often a soup (if so, order it), and, to finish, a cheese plate and pudding. In autumn, the glorious Sommerlad chook might come with mushrooms and brown-rice stuffing, but in January, when the beach across the road is heaving, it could well be teamed with summer squash.

The seasons matter here, as does the service. Staff verbally describe the entire menu, a delightful trait that’s helpful when you can’t decide between blue swimmer crab dusted with flour and fried, or a quail salad with pickled cherries and radicchio. While it can be a tad hectic in December and on Saturday afternoons, few things are more “Sydney” than a long lunch at this stalwart.

Good to know: Forever one of the best places to bring your own wine.
