15/20Paski Vineria Popolare
Italian$$
Knockout pasta and wines add up to good times.
At street level, this thoroughly Italian establishment is a wine bar for the people. And the people have spoken – any evening it’s brimming with a lively crowd of committed fans. Meanwhile, upstairs, the revelry continues, overseen from the wall by a rowdy take on The Last Supper.
The menu – designed for the myriad Italian wines lining the eastern wall – may be tight, but it’s packed with flavour. Whipped ricotta topped with anchovies, fermented chilli and garlic calls for extra focaccia, pronto. Borlotti beans and spelt, the tasty juices soaked up by grilled sourdough, come draped with lithe slices of pickled pumpkin, while a tight coil of tagliolini and prawns is slicked with tomato sugo and topped with almond and zucchini-flower pesto. And don’t sleep on the torta della nonna – a deep wedge of custard tart adorned with toasted pine nuts. All good reasons to start planning your next (last) supper here.
Good to know: Continue the party at home with takeaway bottles from the serious line-up of Italian imports.
