Police have charged a 45-year-old man with the murder of a "dearly loved father" whose body was found beside a walking trail earlier this month.

A member of the public discovered the body of Alan Thomas Christie, 41, on October 7 in Maryborough West, about three hours north of Brisbane.

Following a two-week investigation, detectives have charged Shaun Glen Jones, 45, with one count of murder.

Detective Acting Inspector Cameron Schneider said it was alleged that Mr Christie was assaulted in the early hours of the morning and died at the scene on Slaughterhouse Road.

"I won't go into much detail about the injuries or the weapons used, but we'll be alleging that excessive force or blunt force was used against the deceased," he said.

He said the men were known to each other as "associates" and were both sleeping at a campsite near the crime scene.

Acting Inspector Schneider said officers were still determining the motive behind the alleged assault.

"We'll try and explore the timeframes and the extent to which they knew each other," he said.

"We're still establishing the grounds of why it occurred, and we'll be putting that before the courts."

A public obituary for Mr Christie described him as a "dearly loved" father to two children, as well as a much-loved son and brother, who had previously lived in Bundaberg.

Mr Jones appeared in the Maryborough Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody, with the matter adjourned for mention on January 19.
