A proper cattleman’s lunch, with a view to the paddocks.
This might be a working cattle farm, but it’s no place for flannels. Even though Goonoo Goonoo Station was founded in 1831 as a major merino sheep run, today, it’s a farmstay with luxury accommodation and a glass-wrapped restaurant where the shearing shed once stood.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows frame gum-dotted paddocks, where the property’s 3,000-head of white-faced “Black Baldy” cattle graze the fields. Not enough, though, to supply the menu. Prime cuts, including sirloin and petite tender, are sourced from Kidman & Co out west, but it’s the pork that stands out, served as a fat chop and sealed in a pecorino crumb. Sides are hefty, whether it’s salt-baked beetroot or ribboned zucchini salad, and the burrata with plum and almonds is made on site.
Just out of view, a number of restored cottages are available for overnight stays. You won’t be up with the farmhands in the morning, but a hot skillet breakfast will be ready whenever you are.
Good to know: Come during the day for uninterrupted views of the Liverpool Plains.
