14/20Duke’s After Hours
Mediterranean$$$
Formerly known as Fred’s Providore, this daytime deli carves up nighttime fun.
There’s been a copyright conundrum and a name change, but what hasn’t changed at “Duke’s” is the mission: deli and providore by day; bistro and wine bar by night, offering snacks right through to a $220 bone-on rib-eye direct from the on-site butcher.
Wagyu skewers, served with cafe de Paris butter and kissed by charcoal, are a more manageable main, and ordering them means there’s space for seafood, too, from nicely charred octopus with corn puree through to sole meuniere that would do a Parisian bistro proud. Daytime is sandwiches on focaccia, early evening is families, snacks and drinks, then as night falls, the volume increases and the crowd becomes younger and more carefree.
This versatility, combined with solid know-how across the board (staff will shake a spicy yuzu margarita as well as they’ll pour a chardonnay), makes Fred’s – sorry, Duke’s – a true local hero, whatever name it might go by.
Good to know: If you’re after a more relaxed meal, leave the bustle inside and claim an outdoor table – sand-friendly in summer and nicely heated in winter.
