Pizza with crackly crusts, smart pasta and low-lit charm.
You’ll find just as many people queuing for takeaway orders as dining-in at this lively Willoughby osteria, which brings buzz to a sleepy suburban strip. There’s a tight wine list – ask for a mystery pour if you’re feeling lucky – and a couple of spritzy openers, best paired with crunchy cacio e pepe arancini. Wood-fired bread is non-negotiable for swiping through fantastically smoky salumi XO beneath plump burrata.
Pasta arrives nicely glossed and perfectly al dente, but the pizza here is the main event: long-fermented dough delivering deep flavour, airy chew and crisp, blistered crusts.
You’ll want to order two. For starters, try the Killa Beez, which stings with biting-hot sopressa before honey cools things down, then go the Scampino, which balances creamy, garlicky punch with briny capers and sweet prawns – it’s one of the best seafood pizzas in Sydney. Finish with a velvety tiramisu dusted thick with chocolate shavings. Textbook stuff.
Must-order: The Scampino Pizza, with prawns, confit garlic cream and capers.
