Bar Outro

Contemporary$$

A wine bar and listening lounge with ambition in the glass and on the plate.

The centrepieces may be the rippled mirror finish on the bar and the vintage speakers, but as much as the focus seems to be on the drinks and the vinyl at Bar Outro, there’s far more under the hood.

One more recent-ish opening from the rapidly expanding The Goodlife hospitality group (Recess; Terra), Outro is more wine bar than listening bar, with plenty of outdoor seating in the thick of Lonsdale Street complementing the jazz, soul and disco spinning inside.

Music takes a back seat to share plates, from warmed south coast oysters with a Sichuan kick through to sticky lamb skewers piped with yakiniku sauce. It’s all high impact – chicken skin in the butter, sauce roquefort au vin blanc in the dry-aged cheeseburger – so go for small volume, leaning on the wine list and cocktails (the strawberry and clarified tomato gimlet is a standout) to keep things in check, with plenty of pauses between tracks.

Good to know: Hit happy hour for drinks under $10 and steak and chips for just $21.
